My favorite author would have been 94 yesterday. A fellow Leo. A fitting sign for a writer. I adore how this man can make a simple scene complicated yet relatable. I discovered James in my twenties and have been a fan ever since. I must admit I have not read all of his books, in fact, Giovanni's room I did not finish. To this day I still don't know why but I intend to return to that book someday when I'm ready.
James Baldwin was an opinionated, skinny little dark skin man with huge eyes and a mouth which was his megaphone to the world. He was a pioneer before his time not just as a gay writer, as well as being a brilliant writer of material that wasn't gay. He was also an activist in the sixties a time we so need to resurrect today with all the political turmoil going on in this country.
James opened doors for those of us who write and those who read and appreciate the composition of beautiful words. I hope he continues to thrill those who are listening wherever he is.
